UPDATE: Withings or Without, Withings(Nokia) Body Cardio Scale Review

Update: July 9th, 2019

Since I wrote this review, a couple of things happened.

1. The internal battery in the scale died and needed to be replaced but Nokia deems it obsolete and instead would prefer I purchase a new one.

2. I proceeded to buy a new one on Amazon instead. I purchased the RENPHO Premium Smart Heart Scale Body Analyzer Monitor for a fraction of the price of the Nokia Body Cardio.

The one bad thing about the built in battery is that it is hard to replace the battery. That is the reason why Nokia would rather you buy a new one.

It died in late 2018, meaning it only lasted about two years. That , to me , is a very short lifespan for the price of $199.99

I opted to do some research and see what else is out there. I settled on the RENPHO scale with a better price point. I will be writing a post on it shortly. I have linked it here.

Are you in the market for a Wi-Fi scale, one that connects easily and displays the information in an app?  Making it easier to track your progress or lack thereof...

The now Nokia Body Cardio (Nokia purchased Withings) might be the winner.

I have been using the scale since November 2016 and has been tracking all my information ever since.

There are several metrics that can be tracked

·      Weight

·      Heart

·      Body Fat

·      Muscle Mass

·      Body Water

·      Bone Mass

·      Height

·      Blood Pressure

·      Nutrition

·      BMI

·      Steps

·      Pulse Wave Velocity (Being Discontinued on 1/24/2018)

You can display all of them on your scale or as little as you want, I currently have;

·      Weight

·      Heart Rate

·      Body Fat

·      Muscle Mass

·      Body Water

·      Bone Mass

·      Pulse Wave Velocity

·      Steps

The setup is real easy, plug in the scale, download the app and follow the on screen instructions. Not much to it.

It’s also very simple to use, you stand on the scale and you will start to see all the metrics come on the screen. Once you see all your metrics scroll through, you can get off and the information will be synced to your app via Wi-Fi.

The website says you can use it on carpet but I have had uneven results so I prefer a hard surface.

You can track up to 8 users ,which the Body Cardio automatically recognizes, there is even a baby mode and Pregnancy Tracker.

You can set the unit in which you would like your weight displayed, kg, lb and st lb.

Since I bought the scale I have yet to charge it and from the picture you can see that it is at 8%. I will be charging it soon, I need to find the box first since that is where I have the Micro USB cable.

The app is where all your information gets stored, at the bottom you have all your tabs that display the information

·      Timeline

·      Dashboard

·      Programs

·      Devices

·      Profile

The Timeline displays every measurement ever taken, since I track my steps everyday, the app also displays all my steps for the given day in real time.

The Dashboard gives you all the information you have set up as of the last measurement taken.

The Programs tab has different wellness programs that you can join, keeping you motivated through out.

The Devices tab keeps track of all the devices you might have from Withings or Nokia such as Watches, Thermometers and Video & Air Quality Monitors

Lastly, you have the Profile tabs and you guessed it, that is where you input all your information and shows you other information pertinent to your profile.

I have enjoyed my experience with the scale and like having all the information with me at all times. The app can be a bit confusing especially when using the charts.

Nokia announced that it will be discontinuing Pulse Wave Velocity feature via a mandatory software update on January 24,2018. It is quite unfortunate since it’s a very useful feature that measures arterial stiffness and the reason many people opted for the more expensive scale.

The Body Scale is classified as a “wellness device” and would need further FDA approval to keep the PWV. Nokia claims it is a proactive decision to keep its “wellness device” classification.

Nokia will stop the sale of the scale for now but will resume in the first few months of this year. Nokia has also started a refund program for unhappy, current customers that offers a $30 coupon or the chance to return the scale for a full refund.

Overall, I do think it is a solid scale
